Kinesiology (BS)

Description

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in exercise science.

The Exercise Science Program is designed specifically to prepare students for careers as personal trainer, exercise physiologist, strength coach, cardiac rehabilitation, and more. Many students continue their education with post-graduate study in allied health areas (medical school, physician's assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and chiropractor) or within the field (exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology).

Coursework in the major provides a cross-discipline choice of courses to meet each student's career interests, including study in the following areas:

  • Human physiology
  • Kinesiology
  • Physiology of exercise
  • Foundations of conditioning

Minors are available in coaching, dance, strength and conditioning, or other fields of students' interest.

The program offers opportunities for on-site learning, with the internship as the culminating experience. Opportunities for laboratory experience are offered in physiology, biomechanics, graded exercise testing and prescription, and sports activity. Instruction is centered in the 230,000-square-foot Health and Human Services Building.

Numerous opportunities exist in Terre Haute and the surrounding area for students to volunteer with children and adults as coaches, instructors, and mentors. These include the local hospitals, clinics, fitness facilities, and the school corporations.

Exercise Science offers one-on-one advising to help ensure that students are taking the right courses to prepare for whichever career most interests them. Whether students are going straight into the exercise science profession or planning to go on to a graduate program, Indiana State's Exercise Science major prepares students for success.
